Event Details

An exhibition by Safina Kimbokota (TZ) Folded Memory of Whispering Leso is an exhibition by Tanzanian metal sculptor, painter, and textile artist Safina Kimbokota, exploring the often-unseen realities of pregnancy and motherhood in Tanzania. Rooted in her doctoral research and developed through collaborative workshops with pregnant women and mothers from health centres across Dar es Salaam, the exhibition reflects on fear, exhaustion, resilience, grief, and care. Through immersive installations, sculpture, textiles, and a cocreated woven tapestry, Kimbokota invites audiences into the emotional and physical experiences carried by women during pregnancy, labour, and motherhood. The exhibition highlights the silence surrounding maternal struggles from postpartum depression and loss to the emotional weight of expectation and sacrifice. Rather than a critique, Folded Memory of Whispering Leso is a call for empathy and visibility. By sharing stitched and spoken stories from mothers themselves, the exhibition transforms maternal mortality and caregiving from distant statistics into deeply personal human experiences. It is both an honouring of Tanzanian mothers and a reflection on the resilience required to carry life into the world.
